Final Poster
This was my final Poster design, I went for a subtle colour scheme of grey, blackand white, this is too keep in context of our film. The background was choosen because it looks as though the flag is burning which symbolises the fall of the Nazis which is the plot of the film, i also made the male character see through as this shows he is coming from the shadows to come and take over, the choices i made were all down to do with the plot as i made them to do with choices we made for our film. We also included formats you would expect to see on a film poster such as social networking sites and IMAX cinema screens to show where you can see the film.
Evaluation
- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
It also challenges conventions as the Ident used in the trailer is a none moving ident, this challenges the conventions as predominantly the idents move. It develop conventions of a trailer as it sticks to the same format of having a beginning, middle and end which is shown by moving the storyline on as the trailer progresses through the trailer, which is clearly shown as different series of events take place during the trailer. The trailer develops conventions of trailers as it finishes on a cliffhanger as it goes to a blank screen then a gunshot which makes the audience want more as they want to see what the ending really is.
- How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
I think the effectiveness of the ancillary tasks is good as there is a reminder on all texts that they are all related to the same film, such as the text used on all products are the same font and colour, also the tagline appears on all the texts 'will it be the last' this was choosen because it adds a sense of mystery towards the film as the cliffhanger on the trailer it makes you wonder what the ending actually is. Also there is a convergence as even the pictures on the posters and magazine shows the same costume used throughout the trailer. In ways the werent effective you could say the fact that the shots were never taken from actual footage from the trailer it was always a staged photo, however from our research very little shots are actually used on the posters and magazines that appear in the trailer. Here are the the final products I made.- What have your learnt from your audience feedback?
From this group we found that they Liked the trailer on the whole, there favourite parts were the sound effects, Music, The Acting and the overall good quality of the trailer.
group we found that they didnt really like this it was a group mainly of girls who it never really appealed to their audience however they did like some bits of the trailer such as the Over the shoulder shot, i think this nieche audience didnt like this as they are also to young compared to the audience that we aimed at
this group owe saw that they liked the trailer as it was a different genre of film, than what they are used to. They enjoyed the trailer because the acting and edits were good on the trailer also the sound track was well suited to the trailer.
- How did you use new technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stage?
During the Construction stage of making the products i used a number of new products such as iMovie-To construct our trailer by adding effects transitions and soundtracks to make our trailer.
Photoshop- We used Photoshop to create the magazine covers and film posters. by editing pictures to create a suitable poster for my film.

Magazine Development
I first placed picture of a hooded man ripping the flag with a gun in hand
Then i adjusted the contrast on the picture just of the man to make him stand out from the background
I started adding shapes to get the idea of where my text was going to go on the Magazine
I then added the titile of the film 'Fourth Reich' i placed it over the man as when you are drawn to the picture you will see the text, also the way i placed it you can still see the swastika so they can see what film is about
Then i added the tag line 'will it be the last?' t
Then came the title 'The Scoop' i used this as people want the latest news from films
i added more boxes for text
i then added the tag-line for the magazine and price and issue number
i then started to add my text to the Magazine
finally i added the Barcode

Poster attempts
this was my 1st attempt of a film poster i went for the simple poster as i thought it would be most effective i made the characters grey apart from there faces, and a dark red text to fit in with the Nazi Colours, the main colour on the poster is red as it grabs the readers eye
this was my 2nd attepmt for the poster i varied the text up by putting some in white keeping with the grey theme and also the 3 colour rule now i have grey red and white the prodominant colours of the Nazi party keeping in line with the film type we had choosen.
this was my 3rd attepmt at the poster i made the background the Swastika made famous by the Nazis also keeping with the colours of the flag I made sure that i was using the same colour i made the Title a bolder red to catch the audiences eye as it stands out on the page
Film Title for trailer
These are the title scenes for our film we created these on photoshop these appear on the end of trailer
Idents
- Paramount-logo includes twenty four stars which come from the clouds and circle around a mountain top. The mountain is based on a mountain in Utah in the United States of Amercia. After the stars surround the mountain top then the Paramount logo comes down and fits inbetween the mountain top and the surrounding stars
- Dreamworks-uses features a boy fishing whilst sat on the moon. The boy is the son of one of the co-founders of Dreamworks, Steven Spielberg. Dreamworks was founded in 1984 and the founders of Dreamworks are, Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg. The ident start offs with a reflection of the moon in a lake and a fishing line with a float hits the water. The rest of the ident is dominated by clouds and space. The camera then travels up through the clouds to reveal a bright white boy fishing whilst sitting on a cresent moon
- Coloumbia-ident features a woman holding a flame torch and clothed in clothes patterned with the American flag, this is meant to represent the statue of liberty as it shows the freedom given to americans to 'persue their dreams'. The ident starts with a zoom out to reveal the main focus of the ident which is the woman and the bright shining torch. The woman used in this ident now was created from a live model which was digitally enchanced to make the woman look more 3D than it's 2D original painting.
- MGM-MGM stands for Metro, Goldwyn and Mayer. MGM was founded by Marcus Loew and the names Metro, Goldwyn and Mayer stand for Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures Corporation and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. The name was created when founder Marcus Loew took control of these companies. MGM has Incorporated a lion into every ident which they have created since the company was founded in 1924. MGM is famous for distributing famous cartoons such as Tom & Jerry and Droopy. There have been six lions used since the start of MGM and all have their own names, the first lion used was Slats the Lion and was used between 1917-1928, the second lion was called Jackie the Lion and was used from 1928-1956. The third lion, Tanner the Lion used between the years 1934-1956 during which time they swapped between Tanner and Jackie. The forth lion, George the Lion, used between 1956-1958 and lastly Leo the Lion used from 1957 to the present lion which we see on our screens today. MGM also used to feature parody idents by using such characters as Tom from Tom & Jerry insted of the lion for selected episodes. This ident is very simple but rememberable because all it features is the lion and its surroundings. The lion lets out a big, loud roar to the audience.
- 20th Century Fox-20th Century Fox was founded in the year 1935 after merging with Fox Film Corporation which was founded twenty years earlier by William Fox and also merging with 20th Century Pictures which was founded by Darryl F Zanuck in the year 1933. 20th Century Fox is best known for films and television programmes such as Star Wars, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Die Hard, Planet of the Apes, Home Alone and Ice Age. 20th Century Fox is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
- Warner Brothers-Time Warner is the parent company of Warner Bros. from 1989 onwards and was founded in 1918 as Warner Bros. Studios by four brothers called Harry, Albert, Jack and Sam Warner. Warner Bros. has encorporated many different logos over the years since 1918. Here is all of the logos that Warner Brothers have used over the years
From 1923 the logo used by Warner Bros. is predominantly a shield up until 1972 - 1984 were the logo used, known as "The Big W" is an curved square on a plain black background. This is a simple logo but the logo designers changed from 1984 back to the original shield. Warner Bros. ident starts off with a view of Warner Bros. Studios with a gold shade to the image. From this the Warner Bros. logo is revealed as the camera zooms out and the shield rotates into place in the centre of the frame. Warner Brothers also dont just use their own Idents they also change for big blockbuster films such as Harry Potter here are the examples throughout the years(excluding the last two films)
this is the ident we have choosen to use, we created our own as we decided it would be better than copying another companies, we used the MGM ident as a guide as we thought there style suited our film well as its an older company which suits our action war film style we have gone for

Batman Dark Knight Rises Trailer Analysis
The first trailer I am analysing is for the Dark Knight rises film that come out the summer of 2012 here is the trailer...
the trailer starts off slow as the action awaits to build up, this is used to build tension as the music is also quiet at the time slowly building up increasing the tension, there is also very slow narrative with long pauses between the speech, this creates a new aspect of building tension in the shots as with slower speech it acts as though something is happening to the people in volved. At around 1 minute 20seconds the music starts building up to add a sense of upheaval in fortune of the film as it goes in to a heroic type music adding to the "batman" image of the hero always wins. Later in the trailer the narrative says " you don't owe these people anything..you have given them everything" this suggests that there will be some kind of battle between some people as they insinuate because he has given them everything that he is prepareing for a fight, Batman replies "not yet i havent" this shows that he is the hero as he is willing to die to help gotham giving sense using Propp's theory he reverts to the hero type as he is willing to save the people and risk his life for them. shots used also ses faster jump cuts as the trailer moves on suggesting the action is at a faster pace.

Richard Dyer's Star Theory
Dyer has written extensively about the role of stars in
film, television and music. Irrespective of the medium, stars have some key
features in common. The star is an image, not a real person, that is constructed
(as any other aspect of fiction is) out of a range of materials (e.g.
advertising, magazines, etc.) as well as films and music. Stars are produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings.
Stars descend upon a range of subsidiary media - magazines, television, radio, and the internet - in order to construct an image for themselves which can be marketed to their target audiences. The star image is made up of a range of meanings which are attractive to the target audiences.
Fundamentally, the star image is incoherent, that is both incomplete and 'open'. Dyer says that this is because it is based upon two key paradoxes. These two paradoxes are as follows:-

Fundamentally, the star image is incoherent, that is both incomplete and 'open'. Dyer says that this is because it is based upon two key paradoxes. These two paradoxes are as follows:-
- The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer. The star has to be someone that people can aspire to be like
- The star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer
The
incoherence of the star image ensures that audiences continually strive to
'complete' or to 'make sense' of the image. This is achieved by
continuous consumption of the star through his/her products. In the music
industry, performance seems to promise the completion of the image, but it is
always ultimately unsatisfying. This means their fans will get away determined
to continue consuming the star in order to carry on attempting to complete their
image.

Uses and Gratification Theory
5 reasons why people may engage with the media
1) Escape from reality (film)
2) Relate to others/characters (soap)
3) Entertainment (drama/comedy)
4) Informed and educated (news/documentary)
5) Socialise with others (social network)
2) Relate to others/characters (soap)
3) Entertainment (drama/comedy)
4) Informed and educated (news/documentary)
5) Socialise with others (social network)
Bulmer & Katz
Uses and Gratifications Theory is a popular
approach to understanding mass communication. The theory places more focus on
the consumer, or audience, instead of the actual message itself by asking “what
people do with media” rather than “what media does to people” (Katz, 1959) . It
assumes that members of the audience are not passive but take an active role in
interpreting and integrating media into their own lives. The theory also holds
that audiences are responsible for choosing media to meet their needs. The
approach suggests that people use the media to fulfill specific gratifications.
This theory would then imply that the media compete against other information
sources for viewers' gratification.
Blumler seems to envision a marriage between
cultural studies and the Uses and Gratifications approach, but he is not clear
on what terms. Instead of asking "What are your reasons for watching this
programme?." Blumler would ask "What about it do you find true to life?" or
"What picture of the world does it seem to convey?" (Blumler,
1979).
Propp's Theory
In Propp's theory, he looked at hundreds of fairy
tales and came to the conclusion that within every story there is 8 main characters within the story these include;
The villain - represents evil and struggles against
the hero
The dispatcher - character who makes the problem in
the narrative known and sends the hero on his way
The helper - helps the hero in his quest
The princess/heroine - the hero deserves her
throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil,
usually because of the villain. The hero's journey is often ended when he
marries the princess, usually by beating the villain
Her father - often rewards the hero with the
princess/heroine
The donor - prepares the hero or gives the hero
some magical object to help him in his quest
The hero - the centrail protagonist who leads the
way in the narrative
False hero - takes credit for the hero’s actions,
is usually good looking and is often actually a coward
Strauss Theory
Strauss argues that
meaning in narratives is based on opposites. He was less
interested in the arrangement of the narrative and
more in the deeper meaning of the themes.

science vs. nature

1984 Poster analysis
I have chosen this poster because its a similar type of film as our film, this poster is effective because it ads a sense of mystery over the film as there is a face in the background hidden with a single light over the top adding an eerie sense over the image. Also the poster is quiet plain as there is block colours dominant colour is black with a bit of orange in bottom, this suggests that it is a dark film. There is a picture of two people a man and a woman it looks as though the woman had been injured or died as she is in the mans arms looks like there is some sort of heartache in the film as there is a concerned face on the mans face, this also suggests that there will be some kind of unrest in the film. The tagline 'George Orwells terrifying vision comes to screen' this shows that there is a mystery about the film and going to be problems in the film. The billing list is at the bottom showing that its the name of the film that is going to sell it rather than the actors as its from a famous book so people will already know what is going on with the characters, the company was taking a punt with that and hoping people go for name not actors.

Dark Knight Rises Poster Analysis
The film poster is a simple design but effective this is because it doesn't reveal a lot about the film. The poster shows Batman standing in front of a burning batman logo this denotes that there is a problem he must over come, also you cannot see his face which suggests that there is something to hide from the public. The poster has three main colours, Black, White and Orange these are used as black is the main colour as that is the main colour of Batman which adds an sinister atmosphere as its a dark and secretive. The white is mainly the text too make it stand out on the black background. The fire it the only source of light in the poster, this shows that its going to be a dark film and mainly in the shadows. The angle is a low angle shot of batman getting the image of the bat in the background, they do this to show the problem is occurring while Batman is looking down as if he caused the fire as it is in his symbol. suggests he was the cause. Also its a low angle links to the 'rises' of the name as it looks like he is rising up to the flames. The billing list is also in alphabetical order which makes sure the actors aren't favored over another. The tag line 'a fire will rise' shows that there is a problem going to be faced in the film that will need dealing with.
Captain America Cover Analysis
This magazine cover if for Captain America, a famous superhero. The background on the magazine is the American flag, this conotates that its set in America or that the majority of the film is to do with America. Also the flag loos worn suggest a battle scene or a war taking place during the film. The anchorage of the cover is that the main image is in front of the masthead suggests that the actor and character are bigger than the magazine and will sell it. Also the man in the image has a serious face making it look like there is a battle or war taking place as his fist is clenched and has a shield in hand. Also the lexical choice for the magazine uses words like 'Magazine of the year' which makes the audience want to buy the magazine as they use buzz words to catch the attention. The house colour is white black and yellow, this shows that even tho that captain america even though he has different colours, that they are not as important as the main ones of the magazine, the colours of captain america are dark to fit in and not over power the magazines house style. The magazine also has puffs and pugs grabbing the readers attention making them want to buy the magazine more 'meet the first avenger' this shows that they are aiming for comic book fans as they will know who the avengers are big in comics and want to get all fans of Marvel comics to go and see the film
History of Trailers
Movie trailers have developed a great deal since the idea of moving adverts for films (trailers). Their style and pace have become a great deal shorter and changed a number of times.
1950's trailers
Trailers during this period was l950's were a lot longer, reveiled majority of the stories alot of text flashed on the screen e.g. 'Terrifying! Never before seen!' also on 'snow white' trailer it was unusual as it had Walt Disney talking over it and was unusual now and then for director to give a behind the scenes footage on the trailer.
Example of 1950's trailer...
1980's trailers
Trailers had now started to change, there were more abrupt edits, shorter clips and more cuts breaking the film up. very little was reveled from the movie leaving the audience wanting more from the film, no spoilers. Often there was actual footage from the final edit of the film this grabs the audience to want to see the film. This was the age where catchy tag-lines where used on them
Example of the 1980s... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmJXXVOjUDc
Modern day trailers
Modern day trailers are now a lot quicker paced trailers making them easier for the trailer editing team alot easier, as they also use 'dailys' which are the takes left over at the end of the day which are no longer needed. They also show very little of the movie which leaves the audience wanting more from it. They also use quicker cuts and edits from the olden days this has changed because of the way films have changed many more can be put out during a year which shows them that they need to produce better quality of trailers to help the film sell as usually they are more exiting than the actual film

Dark Knight rises magazine analysis
This magazine is from total film magazine, its advertising the Dark Knight Rises. The anchorage of the magazine is of the main picture of Batman, this is because he is the main person in the film he is shown standing tall and in a strong assertive position, this shows he is in comand and is the hero, also he is in front of the title showing he is a capable of carrying the magazine on his own as they are confident that Batman will sell the magazine on his own. The text on the magazine is the same as the title and the masthead, this is the housestyle of the previous Batman films of which Christian Bale has played in the last 3 films. This is the idea that people only buy things because of the actor this is the case with this as many people would buy it because they like Batman so they would buy this. Also the word Batman isnt mentioned in the title its only in the smaller writing shows that people are aware of who it is and will but it because of him. Also the puffs have people like 'Tim Burton' who is a famous director and even with just his name people will know what it's about even before they have read the article. It also has the 'worlds best movie reviews'with that on the front makes people want it because it draws people in with buzz words. Also the 'The Ultimate Batman Issue' this makes it a one off magazine as it shows that its the 'ultimate' and all fanboys will want it

Definition of a Trailer
Trailers consist of a series of selected shots from the film being advertised. since the purpose of the trailers is to attract am audience, to the film, these excerpts are usually drawn from the most exiting, funny or other noteworthy parts of the film. For the trailer is usually not in chronological order of the story. A trailer is usually 2 and a half minutes long but once a year the companies can extend it to show there biggest hopes for a blockbuster film.

What are the Products used for
Trailers, Posters and Magazines are to attract the audiences
to see the films. Trailers do this by showing clips from the film also by using
the most exciting, funny or noteworthy parts of the film but not too much to
wreck the film for other people. A trailer is only meant to be two an a half
minutes maximum and has to make sure they get the message across to their
target audience. Posters are used to show other aspects i.e. for the new Harry
Potter film they used just the faces of the characters to attract the audience
to see the film because of the actors that are advertised. As on this poster there is no actual mention of the word Harry Potter as its a big industry so doesn't need to. Magazine covers are designed to get the film 'buffs' to go and see the film as they are the ones who usually buy the magazines and want to attract the audience. Introduction
For our year 13 coursework we have been told produce a 2 minute trailer a film poster and a magazine cover for our selected genre, of film. In the group we have decided to do a pshcological thriller film as it suits more of our tastes as a group.
